The Camps Reservoir spillway project is approaching completion, with final works focused on kerbing, road surfacing and site demobilisation.

The multi-million-pound project forms part of a major investment to enhance and protect Camps Reservoir, which supplies more than 30,000 customers across Lanarkshire and parts of Glasgow’s south side.

The spillway structure was completed before Christmas, marking a major project milestone. Temporary construction infrastructure, including crane pads and access ramps, has been removed and the site reinstated.

Before construction could begin, George Leslie carried out an extensive programme of enabling works to access the remote site. The team secured permissions to travel through a nearby wind farm, upgraded bridge infrastructure, protected an existing raw water main and constructed access routes to the reservoir.

More than 25,000 tonnes of stone were transported to site throughout the project, including approximately 20,000 tonnes used to create temporary crane pads and access ramps.

The spillway itself presented challenges due to the steep gradient of the dam face. The site team undertook trial concrete pours to test construction methods and concrete performance before work commenced on the permanent structure.

Commenting on the success of the works, Project Manager Barclay Smart said:

“While the new spillway is the standout feature, almost a year of enabling works was required before construction could begin due to the challenges associated with accessing such a remote location.

Credit must go to our Foreman and Site Agent, along with the wider site team. Their careful management of the concrete works through challenging winter conditions ensured the project was delivered to an exceptionally high standard.”

The use of 3D and 4D modelling also helped visualise construction progress and support collaboration between project stakeholders.

The project team also worked closely with environmental specialists throughout, carefully managing activities around local wildlife, including swallows nesting near the site, otters and nearby ospreys.

Delivered on behalf of Scottish Water, the project represents a significant upgrade to critical water infrastructure. Working closely with designer Mott MacDonald and specialist supply chain partners, George Leslie has helped deliver improvements that will safeguard water supplies for thousands of customers for years to come.
