In 2009, a landslide following a prolonged period of torrential rain blocked the main A83 trunk road between Arrochar and Inveraray, 0.5km south of the Rest and Be Thankful summit resulting in closure of this main route for several days whilst the removal of over 1000cm of debris was undertaken.
This contract involved the subsequent upgrading of the drainage in the area of the landslide, with the removal of the original piped culvert and the installation of a new, enlarged box culvert complete with reno mattress and gabion outfall, and the reinstatement of the embankment supporting the carriageway.
Associated works included replacement of the safety barrier over a 1.6km length together with road pavement reconstruction and lining works over the extent of the scheme with soft landscaping improvements on the road verge completing the contract.
Works were carried out under a single lane closure to minimise traffic disruption with nightshift road closures in place to carry out critical works. Essential access for emergency services was maintained throughout on this critical connecting artery to the mid-Argyll and Kintyre areas.
The overall project involves the off-site fabrication and installation of a new linkspan structure at Oban Ferry Terminal for client Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMal).
