George Leslie visited Boclair Academy to do mock interviews with S6 pupils interested in pursuing careers in engineering and construction.

The purpose of the event was to provide the youngsters with an invaluable opportunity to receive feedback on their answers. It also aimed to help them experience the full range of emotions that real-life interviews can bring – all before they apply for jobs, apprenticeships, colleges, and universities.

For many of those being interviewed, this was their first experience of being in a formal interview scenario. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were immediately apparent, with several expressing interest in professions such as quantity surveying, engineering, and roles in the construction industry.

What stood out most during the interviews which took place at the school on Tuesday, November 4, 2026, was how actively engaged the pupils were in learning more about their chosen fields. Many spoke about gaining hands-on experience through the help of family members, while others mentioned they’d sought out advice and insights from professionals already working in those areas.

When asked what drew them to careers in engineering and construction, they shared a range of thoughtful and personal motivations. Some said they enjoyed maths and problem-solving, while others expressed an interest in roles that’d allow them to see projects develop from start to finish.

In discussing what would set them apart from other candidates applying for the same role, they gave confident and considered answers. Strong leadership skills, a positive attitude, and good work ethic were highlighted as key strengths, all of which will serve them well navigating their chosen career paths.

Principal Teacher of DYW & STEM, Sara Robertson, praised the company’s ongoing support:

“George Leslie have been huge contributors to our Developing the Young Workforce programme over the past couple of years. They recently attended our S6 Mock Interview event where they interviewed pupils interested in a range of careers from construction, engineering, trades and even law.

Rebekah made pupils feel at ease and comfortable in an anxious situation. She also provided incredibly valuable and relevant feedback to help them shape answers for future interviews.

Support like this is invaluable as it provides pupils with positive role models in areas where we do not have internal expertise.”

For the Boclair Academy pupils, the session also served as an introduction to George Leslie. They learned more about what civil engineering entails and the company’s work with partners like Scottish Water and CMAL.

Reflecting on the importance of preparing the next generation, Managing Director, David Ross, said:

“Engaging with young people at this stage in their education provides them with insight into the industry, understand the opportunities available, and encourages them to think about the skills and qualities that will support their future successes.

We wish all the pupils the very best with their engineering and construction endeavours, and hope this experience gives them both confidence and inspiration as they plan for the future.”
