Wastewater Pipelines, Tunnels & Shafts

Steel Street, Gourock

The project was to increase the capacity of the combined sewer in Cardwell Road and Steel Street in the coastal town of Gourock to alleviate the problem of flooding which regularly affected 19 residential properties in the area during periods of heavy rain.

In all, 230m of new sewer pipes were laid, varying in size from 600mm to 1200mm diameter, with 14 new manholes, all around 3m deep in both the main Cardwell Road and residential roads. The new pipeline tied into the existing trunk sewer with a new Combined Storm overflow chamber which incorporated a 1200mm diameter twin-wall overflow pipe which was connected to a 200m long, sea outfall.

The 900mm diameter HPPE sea outfall pipeline was pre-welded, floated out and then sunk into a pre-excavated trench on the seabed which was covered and protected with rock armour mattresses.  M&E works included cabling, connections and control kiosk.

Pre-planning of the work included extensive consultation over road closures and traffic management restrictions with close contact maintained throughout the project with the community council. Despite the close proximity to residential properties for this potentially intrusive contract, residents in the area showed a keen interest in the work and the intervention measures being implemented to resolve a long-standing problem in the area were universally welcomed.
