Reservoir Working

Loch Katrine – Intake Buttress

Loch Katrine in the Trossachs has the capacity to deliver 50mgd of raw water by gravity flow to large parts of the Greater Glasgow conurbation by two, 42km long gravity flow aqueducts. One of the two loch-side intake basin walls was showing signs of structural distress with extensive seepage and movement evident and this project was to strengthen the basin wall with a stone-clad, reinforced concrete supporting buttress and a new access floor slab.

The intake is a Category A listed historical structure and had to remain fully operational throughout the work   It was critical to ensure that the intake remained fully operational with close liaison with Historic Scotland and Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park required throughout.

The main elements of works were:

  • De-watering the inlet basin
  • Grout sealing the basin leaks
  • Refurbishing and closing the inlet penstocks
  • 3.5m long dowel-bars drilled 2m into basin slab
  • Construction of the 3m deep r.c. base slab
  • Construction of the 5m high concrete buttress wall
  • Forming air-vents through new support structure
  • Ashlar stone cladding wall finish
  • New safety hand-railing around the basin perimeter
