This contract comprised the complete refurbishment of the existing station at Greenock. Extensive demolition work was involved at the outset. Two redundant footbridges were removed, the larger of which entailed the use of a 400 ton mobile crane during a 29 hour possession. The demolition of all the other disused masonry railway buildings then followed.
Strengthening works were carried out to the existing retaining walls using a rock anchor system which avoided the use of a sheet piled anchor wall. Construction of the new platform and car parking facilities then proceeded. Out of gauge platform edging was removed and new platform oversail units were installed to suit current vertical and horizontal alignment of the track.
Passenger facilities were considerably upgraded. The existing station offices were reconstructed using the traditional materials salvaged from the original, while additional modern waiting shelters were also provided. Disabled access was provided by way of mobility ramps. Considerable strengthening work was required to the south boundary masonry wall.
The works were completed to a tight schedule despite the fact that planning permission for the demolition works was only received part way through the pre-booked possessions.
The overall project involves the off-site fabrication and installation of a new linkspan structure at Oban Ferry Terminal for client Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMal).

GL making a return visit to the Sound of Kerrera off Oban, to undertake substantial repairs to the breakwater which suffered collision damage following an altercation with a workboat earlier this year.
