The works are located on the A816 Oban to Lochgilphead and consist of the realignment of the existing carriageway with associated utility works and accommodation works. The existing road had been operating as a single lane under temporary traffic lights for the previous 4 years due to a landslide on the northbound carriageway.
Construction works were required to be completed without closing the road. The southbound carriageway was realigned by excavating 1500m3 of rock embankment whilst traffic continued using single lane traffic lights on the old northbound carriageway.
After completion of road surfacing on the southbound carriageway, the traffic was diverted to use the newly constructed road and works progressed on the protection works for the northbound embankment. A buried reinforced concrete retaining block and traffic barrier foundation was constructed over the landslip area.
After completion of barriers, road markings and landscaping, the road was reopened to two way traffic.
The overall project involves the off-site fabrication and installation of a new linkspan structure at Oban Ferry Terminal for client Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMal).
