The project was undertaken on for Inverclyde Council to install a new 600mm diam culvert to replace the existing culvert which was in a dilapidated condition and on the point of collapse at various locations throughout its length. The new culvert route was across Manor Crescent and along Burnside Road in Gourock - a busy bus route serving both the local community and High School.
The contract consisted of laying a new 600 mm diam concrete culvert with associated structures within the carriageway at a gradient of between 1;7 to 1;10 following the existing road geometry, whilst maintaining traffic flow and thereafter grouting up the old redundant culvert.
Situated in a residential area, 3rd party stakeholder management played an important part of the project and every effort was made to keep the community informed of events with letter drops, and to maintain ready access to local premises and garage lockups whenever diversionary routes and sectional road closures were implemented
The intended route proved problematic, with uncharted services encountered along much of the length, with many service lines following circutious routes rather than following the obvious straight line. Extensive site investigations and trial holes were undertaken to prove an overall route for the new culvert which resulted in several changes in both line and level. George Leslie Ltd took the initiative to resolve the problems encountered and prove an overall route whilst dealing with local obstructions as they arose – a course of action that was recognised and welcomed by the client, Inverclyde Council.
