New wastewater collection and treatment facilities were required for the coastal community of Port Ellen on Islay in order to comply with the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment (Scotland) Regulations 1994 and the EC Bathing Water Directive. Port Ellen lies on the south coast of Islay on the shore of Loch Leodamais, within the larger Kilnaughton Bay.
The project was undertaken by the Biwater Leslie Joint Venture.
The new waste water treatment works consisted of a Huber Powered Screen, balance tank, distribution chamber and new septic tanks. Effluent passes through a new Copasac chamber, sample chamber and outlet flowmeter before discharging down a long sea outfall extending 450 m from MHWS.
Other major elements of the works included:
· A new satellite pumping station opposite the Maltings, between the road to the Oa Peninsular and the shore
· A new gravity pipeline to intercept the outfalls from the new septic tanks to the west of Port Ellen.
· An upstream CSO, complete with a 6mm bidirectional screen
· A further CSO which included pipeline upgrading to provide storm water storage
· A letterbox screen fitted to an existing pumping station wet well
· An emergency overflow laid to MLWS.
· Replacement dry well pumps complete with electrical control panel.
