Loch Ascog Water Treatment Works is located on the Island of Bute and had a history of PCV failures for bromate, turbidity & manganese. In addition the Drinking Water Quality Regulator had determined that the level of disinfection control was inadequate to ensure consistent bacteriological compliance. There were also issues with respect to taste & odour, relating directly to algal blooms in the raw water source.

The works entailed the construction, installation and commissioning of a new secondary treatment process comprising 3 nr  Rapid Gravity Filters.

Also included with the new works were new chemical dosing plants (Sodium Carbonate, MSP, and Sodium Hypochlorite), and a new portal frame building was also erected to house the new equipment along with a new MCC.

The existing measuring house building was converted into a pumping station to transfer the flows from the existing slow sand filters to the secondary treatment process.
