Dunoon Waste Water Treatment

The project comprised the design & construction of a new wastewater collection & transfer system at the popular coastal location of Dunoon on the east coast of the Cowal peninsula bounded by the Holy Loch and the Firth of Clyde. The work was to enable compliance with the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) to improve the quality of the existing continuous sewerage effluent discharges.
The extensive collection & transfer element of the overall treatment scheme comprised 1.9km of gravity sewers up to 1200 diam   laid at depths of up to 6m; 2.6km of pumped rising mains of 200-300mm diam;10m diam segmental pumping stations  to a depth of 12m with 500m long storm overflow outfalls.

Project development, detailed design, site construction and commissioning were undertaken by the Biwater Leslie Joint-Venture in Partnership with Scottish Water. Construction entailed extensive stakeholder management with local councillors, community groups, SEPA, A&B Council in relation to traffic and pedestrian management. Deep sewers involved extensive rock breaking utilising hydraulic breakers; with suitable broken rock subsequently crushed for re-use. Pipeline works on the foreshore entailed regular tidal working utilising, where possible the two ‘low’ tides to enable progress to be maintained.
QSE was integral to the project management of the project with zero RIDDOR accidents recorded during the fifteen month duration of the construction works.
