George Leslie Ltd were awarded the contract to replace the existing rising main from Cambus Pumping Stn. to Alloa and the subsequent up-grading of the main sewer through the west side of the town down to the Treatment Works.
The replacement of the Rising Main consisted of the laying of 2.5km of 630mm HPPE butt fusion pipe through fields and parkland with 300m of 600mm Ductile Iron in the road. Ground conditions were poor through the fields but were exacerbated by some unseasonable weather conditions and compromised water/drainage courses.
The sewer upgrading involved some 2km of concrete pipes varying from 675mm dia twin track to 1350mm dia connection pipes with thirty-nine manholes. The pipeline runs predominantly through parkland and verge but also zig-zags down through the main industrial centre of Alloa requiring numerous road or lane closures. Depth to Invert Level of the pipe varies from 3.0m to 6.5m in material ranging from very strong sandstone to poor silts/clay.
The project was designed and administered for Scottish Water by consultants Binnie, Black & Veatch from their Glasgow office.
