The works comprised the construction of a piled, reinforced concrete underpass to form a grade-separated interchange at North Kessock on the A9 dual-carriageway trunk road, 4 miles north of Inverness.
This formed part of a larger design and build contract being undertaken by Highland Quality Construction Ltd, to construct the necessary infrastructure to enable further housing and leisure development to take place in North Kessock. The underpass was constructed in two halves with traffic diverted in contraflow on the opposite carriageway during construction.
Construction involved driving AZ36 sheet piles to form the abutments and wing walls, cutting of the pile heads and installation of shear studs, and the construction of reinforced concrete capping beams. The area between the abutments was backfilled and trimmed to level, with a compacted sand screed to support the deck soffit shutter The reinforced capping beams, deck and parapet beam to the first side were constructed in a single continuous pour.
The completed half of the structure was backfilled, and the traffic was diverted over the new deck and the process was repeated on the other carriageway.
