The Auchinstarry Canal Basin project is the first of British Waterways planned developments along the Forth & Clyde Canal.
At Auchinstarry 80000t of material was excavated adjacent to the canal to create an enlarged basin capable of berthing 70 craft, with a fully equipped Amenity Block constructed to provide resident and passing canal traffic with toilet, shower, cooking and laundry facilities. A new road was constructed from the existing B802 to provide improved access into the development with a new car parking area constructed adjacent to the Amenity Block.
Also included in this phase of the development were, a crane pad to facilitate removal and return of long boats to the canal, a boat storage yard for wintering and maintenance of boats, and a new slipway to service smaller craft.
The work also encompassed the infrastructure associated with these main elements which included a new sewage system complete with reed bed filtration treatment and new surface water drainage, together with telecommunications, CCTV and external lighting throughout the development.
Security fencing and substantial hard and soft landscaping was also carried out for future phases of development, the plans for which include a pub, restaurant and Bunk-House overnight accommodation.
