Tayport Wastewater Treatment Works

The Tayport Wastewater Project provides wastewater treatment for the North Fife communities of Tayport, Newport and Wormit to comply with EEC directives. Wastewater flows from each community are transferred by new pumping stations through approximately 4km of new HPPE rising mains to the location of the new treatment works, which was selected following extensive feasibility optioneering of various potential sites.

The new treatment process comprised the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the following principal elements:

  • Inlet works with upstream valve chamber, flume channel, screen channels and degritting plant.
  • Sequence Batch Reactors in 3nr 15m diam concrete tanks.
  • Air Blowers
  • 12m diam final effluent balancing tank and combined pumping station.
  • Sludge thickening system, with feeder pumps, pumping station and storage tanks and tanker discharge points

Ancillary accommodation works also included retaining walls, access roads and footpaths, an odour control plant, service water storage, interconnecting pipework and a steel-framed admin building.

Detailed design development and carefully planned construction sequencing enabled minimisation of the Works footprint. Extensive earthworks resulted in the major structures being partially buried and a screening earthwork bund was constructed around the perimeter of the site, all to minimise the visual intrusion of the works, located at this prominent location on the south shore of the River Tay estuary.
