Muirdykes Water Treatment Works treats raw water abstracted from the Rowbanks-Barcraigs impounding reservoirs and supplies up to 60Ml/day of potable water to the Howwood, Linwood, Johnstone and Paisley areas of Renfrewhire.

The existing works required upgrading to improve the drinking water quality with the opportunity also taken to undertake major capital maintenance upgrading. The major elements of work included:

• Replacement of the existing wash-water sludge transfer pumps and the installation of a second sludge balancing tank and agitator which included all associated pipe-work, valves and actuators for both.
• Relocation of the supernatant return
• Upgrading of the chlorine dosing system, with new chlorinators, controller and gas monitoring equipment.
• Modification of the existing aluminium dosing to provide a new dosing chamber, dosing connection and lances and the replacement of the existing two alum dosing pumps.
• Provision of new ph, turbidity and ultrasonic level instrumentation.
• Refurbishment of seven rapid gravity filters including new plenum floors, supports and replacement media
• SCADA/PLC replacement
• Refurbishment of the pre-lime dosing plant

This significant upgrading and improvement programme of work was undertaken with close co-operation with Scottish Water Operations to ensure that a continuous supply of the essential potable water into service was maintained.
