Linwood Johnstone Rationalisation Scheme
The Linwood Johnstone project involved the rationalisation of three existing wastewater treatment works in Linwood, Johnstone and Erskine, with the construction of new sewage pumping stations with storm retention tanks, new collection and transfer pipelines and a new treatment works located on the site of the existing works at Erskine on the banks of the River Clyde.

The main elements of the collection and transfer works included:
•    Two new  wastewater pumping stations, which incorporated outfalls to local watercourses
•    9km of rising main, ranging from 500-900mm diam; included major road and rail crossings

Refurbishment and reconstruction of the existing works at Erskine encompassed:
•    A new inlet works with screening and grit removal
•    Construction of a new aeration lane
•    Four new  final settlement tanks
•    Sludge thickening plant
•    Sludge transfer system
•    Conversion of existing primary settlement tanks into storm retention tanks.

The contract was the largest single contract undertaken by the Biwater Leslie Joint Venture as a part of an extensive programme of work for Scottish Water, which involved the development, design, construction and commissioning across a wide range of projects through the south-west of Scotland.  Design work was carried out by Bullen Consultants who formed an integral part of the project team. The Joint-Venture’s involvement encompassed all stakeholder issues associated with the project development, including land acquisition, planning and dealing with the public utilities interfaces.
