The coastal community of Carradale and Port Righ required new wastewater collection and treatment facilities in order to comply with the requirements of Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations in Scotland.
The project comprised the design and construction of new collection and transfer pipelines, associated pumping stations, and a new wastewater treatment works, located in Port Righ.
A satellite pumping station takes the flows collected in the Port Righ and surrounding area to a central transfer pumping station, with a similar installation at the harbour collecting the flows from the newly installed mains around Carradale.
The Transfer Pumping Station delivers the combined flows to the new treatment works,which has been constructed remote from the villages.
The treatment works comprises an inlet, flowmeter, distribution chamber and septic tanks. The final effluent flow continues thereafter by gravity overflow to a final effluent pumping station and onward for discharge through a new marine outfall.
The project was one of the schemes undertaken by the Biwater Leslie Joint Venture under the Coastal Communities Framework originally set up with West of Scotland Water Authority, and subsequently carried through with Scottish Water.
