Moredun Playing Field Flood Prevention Scheme
The works were designed to store and control floodwater in order to prevent flooding of the residential areas adjacent to Moredun Playing Field, off Gleniffer Road in Paisley.
The main elements of the contract comprised:-
- Construction in three stages of 20000m3 Type C imported clay embankment. This involved the foundation strengthening of a weak formation, a 40 week period monitoring the settlement of the initial clay import including temporary surcharge loading, and the subsequent completion and testing of the clay embankment.
- Construction of 1500m3 reinforced concrete structures including a flow diversion structure, floodwater storage culvert and spillway structure.
- Channel regrading of 200m long watercourse including 1200m3 of gabion and reno mattress protection works.
- Major sewer diversions within 5 hectare site boundary.
- Land drainage to playing field area.
- Erection of timber footbridge across spillway structure.
- Testing & Commissioning using water from Stanley Reservoir to flood the area. This involved installation of considerable temporary pipelines and siphons.
Significant and restrictive traffic diversion routes were managed, and controls were instigated to comply with stakeholder and contractual requirements in relation to working hours limitations and general public interfaces. Effective environmental pollution control was instigated to prevent contamination of adjacent watercourses.
