This project involved the diversion of the existing 375mm diam sewer in Grindlay Street and Cambridge Street to facilitate the basement extension to the Usher Hall. The extent of the diversion included six new manholes and 120m of new 375mm diam concrete sewer pipe constructed through rock to a depth of up to 4.5m from carriageway level. The pipeline was installed under a full road closure to provide a safe working zone for the site operatives, whilst maintaining safe pedestrian access around the work site.
As the project programme spanned the Edinburgh Festival period with a forced 4 week embargo on site activities, the project called for good public relations and a proactive approach to manage the concerns of the adjacent business premises.
The project was delivered in 13 weeks on site, 7 weeks early even allowing for a full demobilisation and remobilisation for the Festival interruption when reinstatement was undertaken to provide full road access.
