The new wastewater treatment scheme for Tobermory on the island of Mull has scooped the Environmental Sustainability Award in Scottish Water Solutions annual competition.
The environmental achievement of this project was the ability to develop a solution which addressed both the immediate needs of appropriate sewage treatment for Tobermory, but also the longer term sustainability of the island-wide sludge strategy of treating and disposing of all the islands sludges on the island, thus saving the high cost and unwelcome mainland tankering operations.
Other sustainable aspects of the project included wind-driven aerators for the faculative lagoon treatment works, use of locally sourced materials and the processing and re-use of excavated materials.
